C.J. Miller, LLC Receives Paving Honor from SHA, Maryland Asphalt Association
C.J. Miller, LLC was proud to be among a select few honored as a 2016 Paving Award Winner during the Maryland Asphalt Association and State Highway Administration 55th Annual Paving Conference March 1.
The company was presented with a Primary Resurfacing Award for its project on MD 140- Royer Road to Mayberry Road in SHA District 7 in Carroll County.
Paving Foreman Bryan Laughman headed up the project, which involved milling the existing roadway surface, performing base repairs/patching, placing the leveling course and the final overlaid surface paving. The project used more than 28,500 tons of asphalt, which was produced in C.J. Miller’s Westminster Plant.
Laughman, who has been employed by C.J. Miller for three years, worked his way up from a Machine Operator to Paving Foreman.
Simply put, he has a love for working with blacktop.
“I love to see something that’s not there and visualize the possibilities,” he said. “As a foreman, I like being given the tools and technology to help my crew see what I see. I enjoy the visual aesthetics of an asphalt paving project, seeing it smooth and coming together in a nice consistent flow.”
Laughman said when it comes to MD 140, he feels the rideability of the roadway is top notch.
“It’s a smooth ride and the overall aesthetics are quality,” he said. “The joint transitions turned out nice and the lines are as straight as possible.”
Paving Expert Michael Moses and Maryland Asphalt Association President Marshall Klinefelter presented the awards. Gov. Larry Hogan attended the event and shared photos on his Facebook page noting, “I want to sincerely express my appreciation to the paving companies, the company owners and every single person that works in the paving industry as well as the State Highway Administration for the hard work they do every single day.”
