Standing in front of the MD 137 Bridge job site on Mount Carmel Road in Parkton, Greg Slater of the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) officially kicked off Work Zone Safety Awareness Month with a press conference April 12. CJ Miller LLC is the asphalt subcontractor on this project, working for The Six M Co.

The SHA is replacing an aging bridge at the location as one of 506 projects it’s undertaking on Maryland’s roadways. CJ Miller is installing all the base and surface asphalt for the bridge.

Slater, the Administrator of MDOT SHA, pointed out that there are many distractions in today’s society and it is everyone’s responsibility to stay alert and safe in work zones. The theme for National Work Zone Awareness Week (April 9-13) is “Work Zone Safety: Everybody’s Responsibility.”

Speakers urged drivers to practice patience as workers strive to improve Maryland’s infrastructure and reduce congestion.

“Just as the steering wheel is in your hands, work zone safety is also in your hands,” Henry Alfred, Workplace Safety Manager with SHA, advised.

Slater stated that workers and drivers alike have to make sure they operate safely within work zones.

“Everybody has to do their part,” he said.

With some 500 employees, the majority of whom work in the field, CJ Miller always encourages drivers to please practice patience and remember that these employees also have families they would like to return safely home to each night.
