CJ Miller Supports New Boys & Girls Club Facility
Fourteen years ago, The Boys & Girls Club of Westminster humbly began with 15 children in the basement of a church. In 2006, they were able to open a location on Union Street., which quickly reached capacity. This year, the Boys & Girls Club is preparing to open an awesome new facility on Main Street that can serve up to 600 children.
Marketing Director Erin Bishop was kind enough to give us a tour of the under-construction facility, explaining the challenges facing the children and the benefits the Boys & Girls Club can provide. The Boys & Girls Club serves young children and teens, 78% of whom are at risk and 44% of whom qualify for free and reduced lunches through Carroll County Public Schools. More than half of the children come from single parent homes.
The new Boys & Girls Club facility will feature a radio station, game areas, study areas, a mentoring center, library, computer room, an art room, a seed-to-table garden, a kitchen and eventually a gym. After school, young people can work on homework, participate in the Robotics Club or Baking Club, use the STEM Room, receive mentoring from McDaniel College students in the mentoring center, work on projects in the computer room, play Ping Pong with friends, etc.
Individuals, businesses and two state grants will help support the cost of the new facility, which is slated to open in March.
“The biggest impact I’ve seen in our kids is they have a safe place where they belong and where everybody knows their names,” Erin explained. “It’s a place where they can try new things and the good grades, the leadership, the character building and the new friendships all come from this environment where they flourish.”
Each Christmas, CJ Miller LLC raises money for children or families in need, and this year we are proud to support the Boys & Girls Club and all the work they do to provide a solid foundation and support system for the young people of the community.
