CJM Employee Assists At Accident Scene

April 23, 2019/in News/by CJM-admin

In March of this year, CJ Miller employee Jesse Moe, an equipment operator and member of our soil reclamation team, was traveling from Westminster back to our Hampstead shop on Md 27, when he spotted debris flying through the air. He quickly realized an accident between a pick-up truck and SUV had just taken place. Jesse turned on the flashing yellow lights of his CJM vehicle and dialed 911 as he approached.

Multiple witnesses were on the scene trying to help. After checking to make sure the occupants of the vehicles seemed stable, Jesse began to direct traffic. Authorities quickly arrived on the scene from the Manchester Fire Department and the Maryland State Police and took control of the scene.

For his stepping in and selflessly offering assistance, Jesse was awarded a CJ Miller safety sticker.

Employee Steps Up With Snow Removal Efforts

March 13, 2019/in News/by CJM-admin

Every winter, when our paving and excavating operations slow due to cold temperatures, CJ Miller LLC strives to provide employees with snow removal opportunities. As we all know, snow has its own schedule, arriving and finishing when it pleases. This winter we have had multiple snow occurrences, and we are grateful to the team effort in providing snow removal throughout the county and additionally at Washington Dulles International Airport.

One employee in particular, Buddy Petry, voluntarily stepped up on multiple occasions, making himself available to pretreat roadways as well as the parking lots at CJ Miller. As a thank you for going above and beyond this season, Buddy has been awarded a special safety sticker for his efforts. We are thankful to him and all of our snow removal teams at CJ Miller!

Retiring CJM Foreman Reflects On 40 Years of Moving Dirt

March 4, 2019/in News/by CJM-admin

When you’re like CJ Miller Foreman Kevin Bitzer and have worked at a company for more than 40 years, you have some stories to tell. Some are perhaps not fit for print, but there are plenty of others that Kevin shared during a retirement lunch in his honor March 1.

Kevin and Buddy

Kevin explained that when he started, the current President, CJ Miller III was about 5 years old. Kevin, known by those close to him as “BullCalf,” joked about his nickname and talked about his favorites of the hundreds of jobs he has done in the course of his career. He spoke about the Staples in Sykesville Park, Beachtree, the Walmart in Westminster, and the Shelter Systems project.

“We had nine scrapers and six backdumps and moved 26,000 cubic yards of dirt that day and that was before we had GPS,” Kevin said of the Shelter Systems job.

“We aint’s got enough hours in the day … we could talk, talk, talk,” he said of his experiences at CJ Miller.

Kevin was joined at the lunch by his wife, daughter and son, who is also a CJ Miller Foreman. As a token of presentation he was presented with a CAT model D11, and a coworker presented him with a Master Key for Caterpillar – a hard-to-find Collector’s item.

When reflecting on his career, Kevin said, “We had a lot of good times. I love moving dirt.”

We wish Kevin the best in retirement and thank him for all of his years at CJ Miller.

CJ Miller Employee Helps Because ‘It’s The Right Thing To Do’

February 28, 2019/in News/by CJM-admin

When CJ Miller’s Asphalt Plant Director Joe Frock was sitting in a long line of cars on the morning of Feb. 20, he figured there must be an accident. Joe, who has worked at CJ Miller for about 15 years, was on his way to CJM’s Hampstead headquarters when he passed through the roundabout and saw a car that had run up over the curb. Joe pulled his truck over to inquire if the young lady driving was OK, and he noticed she appeared disoriented.

Joe called 911 and stayed with the woman until help arrived.

When asked why he took the time to stop, Joe said “I always stop – it’s the right thing to do.”

“What if it was my wife?” he said. “It’s two minutes out of your time and if nothing is wrong, then you keep driving.”

We are thankful to have employees like Joe, who go out of their way to help others. For his actions, Joe received a commemorative CJ Miller Safety Sticker. Thank you, Joe!

Stranger Captures Random Act Of Kindness From CJ Miller Employee

January 30, 2019/in Featured, News/by CJM-admin

Back in December, CJ Miller Excavator Operator John Decker spotted a senior woman attempting to cross the street where CJ Miller is working on the Hampstead Streetscape Project. It was raining, and John was quick to come to the woman’s aid in helping her navigate the construction zone.

“I always want to help,” said John, who, also dropped off a letter at the post office for the woman. “It feels good to help someone out.”

Unbeknownst to John at the time, Hampstead resident Kristen spotted the random act of kindness and quickly snapped a picture, which she shared on the Hampstead, MD Facebook page.

Many people liked and commented on the photo, including one woman who said John should be commended for his good deed.

We agree, and today our Utilities Superintendent Donnie Reed was on hand at Streetscape to present John with a special safety sticker he can place on his hardhat, and to offer donuts and coffee to everyone on his crew.

Thank you, John, for your chivalry, and we are certainly happy to have you as an employee!

40 Years Ago – A Glimpse at Our CJM Fleet

July 12, 2018/in Featured, News/by CJM-admin

In 1978, Jimmy Carter was the American President. Minimum wage was $2.65. The top song was “Night Fever,” by the Bee Gees. 1978 was also the same year this particular Mack Super-liner that CJ Miller recently purchased from the Midwest, was built. First introduced by Mack Trucks in 1977, the Super-liner is a heavy duty truck that remained in production until it was discontinued in 1989.  CJM will showcase the Super-liner at area events. While adding this piece of history to our company, we thought we would take a look back at some of the vehicles we did have in operation 40 years ago.

Interested in checking out our current fleet of vehicles? Come drive for us! We’re currently seeking CDL A and B drivers. Return home nightly to your family. Visit our careers page to learn more and apply.
