Status: FT/ Hourly, Non-Exempt
Reports to Paving Superintendent
POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking a skilled and dependable Working Paving Foreman to lead our paving crew on-site while actively participating in the installation, replacement, and repair of public and private pavement surfaces. This hands-on role requires both leadership and technical proficiency, ensuring that all work is completed according to scope, quality standards, and project deadlines.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Plan, manage, and evaluate daily work of the paving crew to meet project goals and deadlines
- Interpret construction plans and drawings to determine the most efficient methods of execution
- Lead onsite paving operations while working alongside crew members
- Oversee the ordering, scheduling, and use of materials; determine quantities required per job
- Coordinate closely with other divisions or crews to ensure project phases align with the overall schedule
- Complete and submit accurate daily work logs, including crew hours and job charge codes
- Document job progress, material usage, and any changes or additional work required
- Operate paving equipment such as pavers, rollers, and skid steers as needed
- Monitor work quality and enforce safety procedures and job site cleanliness
- Serve as the primary onsite contact for supervisors, inspectors, and subcontractors
COMPETENCIES & REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong ability to coordinate with other divisions and teams on multi-phase projects
- Effective materials management and inventory planning skills
- MDE Erosion and Sediment Control Certification (MDE Green Card) – Preferred
- Adult CPR and Standard First Aid Certification – Preferred
- Excellent leadership, decision-making, and communication skills
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- 3–5 years of asphalt paving experience, with at least 1–2 years in a supervisory or crew lead role
- Strong working knowledge of asphalt paving techniques, equipment operation, and jobsite practices
- Ability to read and interpret project plans, blueprints, and technical specifications
- Valid driver’s license
- Proficiency in operating paving equipment and performing manual labor tasks
- Availability to work extended hours, nights, and weekends as needed
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS:
The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by the Paving Foreman to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs and ladders, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Must be able to climb both permanent and temporary stairs and ladders, and safely navigate active construction sites
- Requires use of hands and fingers to handle or feel tools, materials, and controls
- Must be able to talk, hear, and communicate clearly with team members and supervisors
- Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
- While performing job duties on-site, the employee will be exposed to:
- Moving mechanical parts
- High, precarious places
- Fumes or airborne particles
- Risk of electrical shock
- Varying outdoor weather conditions
- Noise level on job sites ranges from moderate to very loud
