C.J. Miller LLC has a proud history as a family business and are welcoming the third generation into the organization. We are committed to our customer and community relationships as we navigate through future generations of the Company and its team members.

  • 1957

     

    The Beginning

    Charles J. Miller, Jr. (Buck) purchased a backhoe and started installing septic and sewage systems while still attending high school. With two employees, one full-time and one part-time, and a dump truck; Buck and his crew completed roughly 150 installations per year.

  • 1959

     

    Open for Business

    Timeline Logo 1959Charles J. Miller, Inc (CJM) officially opened for business, initially completing farm ponds and soil conservation projects while also investing in the training of employees and growing equipment fleet in order to expand into larger excavation projects.

  • 1970

     

    HMA Facility Built

    Timeline Logo 1970The Company built a hot mix asphalt (HMA) production facility in Legore (Woodsboro), Maryland, and Miller Asphalt Products, Inc. was born. The new asphalt plant was used to supply material for the installation of HMA on driveways and farm lanes.  At the time, many of the municipal and county roads in the area were surfaced using the “tar and chip” method and Buck focused his effort on educating local government officials on the superiority of roads surfaced with HMA compared to “tar and chip”.

  • 1979

     

    Finksburg Asphalt Plant

    Timeline Logo 1970A second HMA plant was built in Finksburg, MD. It was during this period that CJM began paving larger state and county roads.

  • 1984

     

    Second Plant at Finksburg

    Timeline Logo 1970The Finksburg location expanded to two HMA plants in order to more efficiently satisfy customer demand while continuing to provide material to the growing construction business.

  • 1988

     

    Underground Utilities Begin

    CJM began working on underground utility projects, focusing on water mains, sewer mains and stormwater management systems for residential, municipal and commercial customers.

  • 1995

     

    Land Clearing and Mulch Production Added

    Land clearing and mulch production commenced in order to further solidify the Company’s presence as the premier site development contractor in Maryland.

  • 1999

     

    Westminster Plant

    CJM purchased a site in Westminster, Maryland in order to construct a fourth HMA plant to satisfy increasing demand.

  • 2004

     

    Companies Combine to Form C.J. Miller LLC

    Charles J. Miller, Inc and Miller Asphalt Products, Inc. were restructured into C.J. Miller LLC. Buck’s children, Lisa, C.J. and William, joined their father in ownership of the newly reorganized company.

  • 2011

     

    Buck Passes Away but Legacy Lives On

    Buck passed away at the age of 71. He is fondly remembered as “a reliable partner that got the job done right” by his business associates, “a tough-love boss with a big heart” by his many employees, “extremely generous with his time and resources” by his community and a loving husband, father, and grandfather by his family.

  • 2016

     

    Finksburg Astec Double Barrell Asphalt Plant

    C.J. Miller LLC upgraded the Finksburg asphalt plant in order to meet the demands for higher asphalt output. This upgrade advanced the Company into a technology-supported production process allowing for greater efficiency in the creation and storage of asphalt, incorporation of higher quantities of recycled product in the asphalt mixes, and at overall lower levels of energy consumption.

  • 2019

     

    CJ Miller LLC Celebrates 60 Years

    Timeline Logo 20192019 marked the 60th anniversary and a major milestone; the third generation of Miller family members to begin working at C.J. Miller LLC. The Company has and will continue to develop the next generation of leaders within the construction industry to ensure CJM remains the premier, full service site development contractor in Maryland.

  • 1959

     

    Open for Business

    Charles J. Buck Miller Jr. officially opened for business primarily completing farm ponds and soil conservation projects. By this time a dozer, loader, tractor and lowboy were added to the equipment fleet.

  • 1964

     

    CJM Hires First Foreman

    Elwood Utz became the first CJM Foreman (other than Buck) which commenced an era of multiple crews contributing to daily production.

  • 1970

     

    HMA Facility Built

    A hot mix asphalt (HMA) production facility was built in Woodsboro and Miller Asphalt Products was born.

  • 1971

     

    Asphalt Roads Begin

    CJM began installation of hot-mix asphalt, mostly on driveways and farm lanes. During this period, Buck made an effort to educate local government officials on the superiority of roads surfaced with HMA compared to tar and chip.

  • 1979

    Curb Installation

    CJM began curb installation on job sites.

  • 1995

     

    Land Clearing and Mulch Production Added

    Land clearing commenced, coupled with mulch production. Additionally, the Woodsboro Plant was moved across Route 194 from its original location within the Legore Quarry (now Barrick).

  • 1999

     

    Westminster Plant

    An HMA site was set up in Westminster.

  • 2004

     

    Companies Combine to Form C.J. Miller LLC

    Charles J. Miller, Inc and Miller Asphalt Products, Inc. were restructured into C.J. Miller LLC. Buck’s children, Lisa, C.J. and William joined their father in ownership of the newly reorganized company. CJM commenced land clearing operations for customers and began manufacturing mulch.

  • 2011

     

    Buck Passes Away but Legacy Lives On

    Buck passed away at the age of 71. He is fondly remembered as “a reliable partner that got the job done right” by his business associates, “a tough-love boss with a big heart” by his many employees, “extremely generous with his time and resources” by his community and a loving husband father and grandfather by his family.

    His motto, “If you always do good work, you’ll never run out of work,” continues to guide the company.

    CJ Miller LLC Becomes Full Service Site Development Contractor

    CJ Miller LLC is the premier, full service site development contractor. Lisa, CJ, and Billy still manage CJM daily operations with the same determination, work ethic, and integrity as their father did when he led the company for over 50 years.

  • 2016

     

    Finksburg Astec Double Barrell Asphalt Plant

    CJ Miller celebrates the opening of its new 400 tph Astec Double Barrell Asphalt Plant in Finksburg bringing the company’s current number of operating plants to four.

  • 2018

     

    CJM Employees 500 People and 1,000 Pieces of Equipment

    CJ Miller is one of the top five largest employers in Carroll County, with 500 employees and some 1,000 pieces of equipment in operation to perform clearing grading, demolition, fine grading, curbs, snow removal, soil modification and reclamation, site utilities and asphalt production and paving. CJM serves private, commercial and government clients.
