Excavating Foreman

Reports to Excavating Superintendent
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Excavating Foreman is responsible for overseeing and directing a crew in the grading of cleared land for construction and stormwater runoff management. This leadership role ensures that work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications, timelines, and budgets. The Excavating Foreman plays a key role in site productivity and quality control and may be required to work extended hours to meet deadlines.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Plan, manage, and evaluate the work of the excavation crew assigned to you
- Interpret plans and drawings to determine the best course of action for grading and site preparation
- Oversee the ordering and utilization of materials, accurately determining quantities and scheduling deliveries to meet project timelines
- Collaborate with other divisions and crews to ensure project efficiency and adherence to the overall schedule
- Lead and manage grading operations for cleared land, ensuring proper construction preparation and effective stormwater runoff management
- Monitor project progress, adjust work plans as needed to meet deadlines, and maintain quality and safety standards
- Complete and submit daily work logs including crew hours, equipment usage, and job charge codes
- Operate heavy equipment as necessary and supervise its proper use on-site
- Document job progress thoroughly, including any extra work required for project completion
- Maintain clear communication with crew members, subcontractors, and project management to ensure alignment on project objectives
- Assist in tracking labor, equipment, and material costs to support budget management
- Promote and enforce all safety protocols to maintain a safe work environment
- Manage multiple site activities simultaneously while working extended hours as needed to meet project deadlines

- Train, develop, and mentor crew members to build trade skills, ensure safe work practices, and uphold quality standards on the job site
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Eight years excavating, utility or other applicable experience, four of which specifically as an Operator
- Valid MDE Erosion and Sediment Control Certification (MDE Green Card) preferred
- Current Adult CPR and Standard First Aid Certification preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS:
The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by the Excavating Foreman to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
- Ability to safely climb permanent and temporary stairs, use construction personnel hoists, and navigate ladders and work areas under construction
- Required vision capabilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
- Job duties involve frequent use of hands for handling tools and controls, as well as physical activities such as sitting, talking, hearing, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling
- Occasionally required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds and up to 100 pounds with assistance
- Work is performed on active construction sites, where exposure to moving mechanical parts, elevated work areas, fumes or airborne particles, varying weather conditions, and potential electrical hazards is common
- Noise levels in the work environment typically range from moderate to very loud
- The ability to work in different weather conditions
