Asphalt Lab Technician
Location: Finksburg, MD
POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Asphalt Lab Technician to support quality control and materials testing operations for asphalt products and roadway construction projects.
This role is responsible for performing laboratory and field testing on asphalt materials, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and safety requirements.
The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, mathematical skills, and the ability to work independently in both laboratory and field environments.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Perform laboratory testing on asphalt binders, aggregates, and hot mix asphalt materials in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, and state specifications.
- Conduct field sampling and testing at asphalt plants and construction sites as needed.
- Prepare, label, and track material samples for analysis and record retention.
- Maintain detailed and accurate test reports, calibration records, and quality documentation.
- Operate, clean, calibrate, and maintain laboratory testing equipment.
- Assist with mix design verification and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures.
- Communicate test results and material concerns to supervisors, plant personnel, and project teams.
- Monitor compliance with safety standards and laboratory procedures.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to material quality and testing efficiency.
- Work flexible schedules, including day shifts, night shifts, weekends, and overtime as required to support production and paving operations.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Previous experience in asphalt, aggregate, construction materials, or laboratory testing preferred.
- Knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, and DOT testing procedures is a plus.
- Ability to operate laboratory testing equipment and troubleshoot issues.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and data entry systems.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including days, nights, weekends, and extended hours as needed.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds independently.
- The work environment may be indoors or outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- The noise in these work environments can be moderate to very loud at times.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
