Operator – Excavator
Location: Hampstead-MD
POSITION SUMMARY:
The primary responsibility of this position is to operate a diesel powered machine equipped with swing boom and scoop attachment used to excavate, load, stockpile, spread and grade dirt, stone and other materials. The excavator is track driven. May also be equipped with attachments such as hammer for breaking rocks or vibraplate for use in compaction.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Utilize pedals and levers to control speed and direction of machine
- Utilize pedals or levers to control height/depth and angle/pitch of bucket
- Install/change attachments using levers and hand tools
- Interpret signals, stakes and markings to respect plan specifications
- Perform daily preventative maintenance such as track cleaning, inspection for damage and fluid check
- Adhere to all prescribed safety practices and procedures
- May be required to perform other labor related tasks (based on experience, abilities, knowledge of incumbent and direction of Foreman) as necessary in assisting crew with job completion
Competencies & Requirements
- Knowledge of controls, methods and techniques for operating Excavator (CAT or John Deere)
- Ability to interpret grade stakes
- Applicable dexterity, depth perception and hand/eye coordination
- Ability to safely operate and maneuver excavator in confined or uneven job site conditions
- Safely removing loose materials with bucket or attachment and preventing spillage
- Properly dumping materials, maintaining equipment stability, and positioning equipment safely around other equipment
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Two years in excavating, utilities, or other applicable experience operating heavy equipment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS
The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by the Operator to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
- The ability to climb permanent and temporary stairs, passenger use of construction personnel hoists, ability to climb ladders and negotiate work areas under construction
- Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus
- Performing this job requires use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, sit, talk and hear, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds individually and up to 75 to 100 pounds with assistance
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work on site at the construction work site where the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock
- The noise in these work environments is usually moderate to very loud
