Encouraging Our Youngest Fans
We love when we receive a phone call from someone who wants to share a positive story about our employees. This week, Cydney Mulieri from Silver Spring called to share how she has been watching her young grandson and taking him to visit our Hampstead Streetscape Project.
She said her grandson, Matteo, knows the names of all the trucks and loves watching our employees work.
“I want to commend those workers for being so kind and so generous with their time,” she said, noting that they have given little Matteo a toy bulldozer, a hardhat and a CJ Miller Dump Truck. “I just wanted somebody to know that you should be proud of the workers. You know, not too many people today go out of their way to be so kind.”
We are thankful to Cydney for taking the time out of her day to call us, and so grateful to have employees like Site Superintendent Jake Orndorff; Foreman Jack Nelson; and HMA Field Technician Dwight Gladhill as well as others, who extend their kindness to young children who are so enthusiastic about our industry. Building America’s Infrastructure makes a difference in the community, and we are proud that our employees patiently share their enthusiasm for that work with the youngest members of the community.
CJM Employee Alerts Family To Tree On Fire
At CJ Miller, employees often joke that there is no such thing as a “predictable” day in this industry. That certainly proved true for CJ Miller Sweeper Truck Driver Bill Miller on a recent workday. Bill, who has been a volunteer with the New Windsor Fire Department for 25 years, was turning his truck around early in the morning at a paving job in Sykesville, when he spotted a large tree in someone’s front yard that appeared to be burning. Upon closer inspection, Bill realized the tree must have been struck by lightning by a storm the previous evening and, unbeknownst to the homeowner, was actually on fire.
Bill stopped and called the fire department and then knocked on the family’s door. When they did not respond, he went and alerted their neighbors, who let the family know. The homeowner, Linda, was so grateful for Bill’s help, that she called up CJ Miller to personally thank him.
“Heaven knows what would have happened if he had not noticed,” she said, pointing out that from her vantage point from her front window, the tree looked completely intact. “It was a big old tree and if it had burned all the way through, it could have fallen on the house.”
She said the fire department came out and a tree service was scheduled to remove the tree that afternoon. “I just wanted to thank your employee,” she said.

Bill, who is starting his sixth year at CJ Miller and started volunteering with the fire department when he was 19 said, “I just enjoy helping people.”
For his quick thinking, Bill was presented with a CJ Miller Safety Award. We are so grateful to our employees for their service to the community, both on and off the job.
CJM Employee Assists At Accident Scene
In March of this year, CJ Miller employee Jesse Moe, an equipment operator and member of our soil reclamation team, was traveling from Westminster back to our Hampstead shop on Md 27, when he spotted debris flying through the air. He quickly realized an accident between a pick-up truck and SUV had just taken place. Jesse turned on the flashing yellow lights of his CJM vehicle and dialed 911 as he approached.
Multiple witnesses were on the scene trying to help. After checking to make sure the occupants of the vehicles seemed stable, Jesse began to direct traffic. Authorities quickly arrived on the scene from the Manchester Fire Department and the Maryland State Police and took control of the scene.
For his stepping in and selflessly offering assistance, Jesse was awarded a CJ Miller safety sticker.
