Operator – Backdump
Location: Hampstead, MD
Position Summary:
The primary responsibility of this position is to operate a diesel-powered, articulated, wheeled dump truck to transfer dirt, stone and other materials within a jobsite. This position works in conjunction with a Loader or Excavator Operator under the direction of the Foreman.
Essential Job Duties:
- Operate heavy equipment such as backdump trucks, excavators, bulldozers, rollers, and loaders in a safe and efficient manner
- Perform daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance (check fluids, grease, clean, etc.)
- Follow project plans, grade stakes, and supervisor instructions to complete tasks accurately
- Load, move, and place materials such as soil, gravel, and debris
- Maintain awareness of surroundings, including other workers, equipment, and potential hazards
- Adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and OSHA regulations
- Communicate effectively with crew members, supervisors, and site managers
- Assist with general labor tasks when equipment operation is not required
Qualifications:
- Utilize pedals and steering wheel to control speed and direction of machine, maneuver into loading and dumping position
- Utilize pedals or levers to raise/lower dump bed
- Interpret signals, stakes and markings, utilize CB Radio to coordinate with other Operators
- Perform daily preventative maintenance such as cleaning, inspection for damage and fluid checks
- Adhere to all prescribed safety practices and procedures
- May be required to perform other labor/operator related tasks (based on experience, abilities, knowledge of incumbent and direction of Foreman) as necessary in assisting crew with job completion
Competencies & Requirements:
- Experience with GPS or grade control systems
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
- Previous experience in construction, roadwork, or site development
Physical Demands/Requirements:
- Knowledge of controls, methods and techniques for operating backdump
- Ability to safely operate and maneuver an articulated haul truck in confined or uneven job site conditions
- Safely hauling loose materials and preventing spillage
- Properly dumping materials, maintaining truck stability, and positioning the truck safely around other equipment
- Applicable dexterity, depth perception and hand-eye coordination
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work on‐site at the construction work site where the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock.
